What the ?

Did you know there are schools in this country that still hold segregated proms? Well there are. Despite it being 2013. Why? Ignorance? I don’t know – it’s beyond me.
How are we supposed to have a truly functioning tolerant democracy if such segregation – be it induced by administrations, financial status, self-imposition, etc. – exists? (As for self-imposition, why on earth would anyone ONLY want to interact with people who are the “same” as them? BO-RING if you ask me.)
I will be forever grateful to have grown up in diverse education and living situations. I can’t imagine not interacting and being friends with people of other races, religions, and ethnicities. It’s always made for the most interesting conversations and interactions.
That our country has made great strides since unfortunate times in history, I am happy and proud. That some parts/ individuals of our country are stuck way back in time, I am sad. And quite frankly, frightened by!

I heard about this and I think it's absolutely awful!!! This is not at all what this country is about and for them to do this to see kids is horrible.

Wow, this is incredible. I feel like there are some places in this country that are so cut-off from the rest of us, that time literally freezes – and the ideals of the past are still taught. That's why I think it's important to travel and experience new places. Diversity is really important with maintaining tolerance because people are afraid of what they don't know. And honestly, take away color, height, gender, etc…we are all human beings! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this Jackie (and for letting me jump on the soapbox with you!)! 🙂

I heard about this, too. I can't believe it. I didn't even know what kind of reaction to have. Totally shocked.

Same here…heard about it and just couldn't believe it. I couldn't agree more that diversity is much more interesting and better for all involved. It is so sad that this still exists.
