Reflecting on Five Years of Marriage

Ours is a love story that movies are made of — not simply because it is romantic and full of love, which it is (he rescheduled 3 flights for me the weekend we met!), but because it has always had its share of complexities. 

We grew up very differently. Even when we met, our lives were vastly different. He had just returned from a seven month deployment with the Navy and I was in my first year of law school. I wasn’t even single at the time…

Our pasts have given us distinct experiences and helped mold us each into who we are today. And though none of it can be changed, we hold the power to rise above and heal traumas, to continue traditions and make our own fond family memories and to grow into who we are while building upon our strengths. We can help one another do that — and we try our best to. 

This means marriage, especially after having kids (because #parenthoodisstressful), has taken work. We have had to work each and everyday of our relationship to become better individually and together. It might not sound all perfect and pretty — and that’s because it isn’t. It’s better than that — it’s real. 

We are each other’s compass when one of us is feeling lost. We are each other’s shoulder when ours feel too heavy from burden. We are each other’s safe place when the world outside feels too cold or scary. We bring out the best parts of each other and help work through our not-so-great parts. 

Ours is a love story that has withstood doubt, distance, fear and darkness. It has given us the greatest gifts in the form of our sons. And it is based upon a love that continues to evolve, grow and thrive.

Anniversary Trip to Colorado in Photos

We are back from our Colorado vacation. It was one of the most beautiful places we have visited and we already have discussed about going back with our boys. Since we rented a car (we were on the fence because driving is not permitted in Vail Village, where we stayed) we were able to drive around and see a few different cities:

The Journey of Motherhood: Adjusting to the New Normal

Motherhood is a journey.

This is Part 1 of a four-part series.

Every new mother has a moment when she catches her reflection in the mirror and sees a
stranger staring back—a stranger who looks like she’s going through a battle of exhaustion and
self-doubt. Motherhood has a way of pulling out the rug from under you and forcing you to
confront difficult changes—with your identity, your relationships, your career, your body, your
social life. Nothing is left untouched by becoming a mother. And this happens even in the most
easy-breezy of circumstances.

If you’re like most women, your mantra during pregnancy was that as long as the baby was healthy, you were happy. The thing is, when that baby does come, you can have that healthy baby and still be…not happy. You can actually have moments of complete and utter sadness. You can miss your old life. And then feel guilty for feeling this way, because aren’t you supposed to be enjoying every moment? Who is that person staring back at you? Where did the old you go? And what if the baby—or you—isn’t healthy in the way you imagined? What then? This isn’t how it was supposed to be. No one told you it would be this hard.

One of the most important things to know about the postpartum period is that you will love the
baby and you will (eventually) love this new life. At the same time, you’ll have moments or
days when you wish for aspects of your former life. You know how your baby goes from
peaceful cooing to crying in a flash? You might experience the same rush of emotions—one
minute you’re in awe of the strength of your body to bring this baby into the world, swelling with
joy, peace, and love at this new life, the next minute you can crash with self-doubt, shame,
worry, and sadness. You will have the highest highs and you will have some of your lowest lows
all on the same day.

This is motherhood.

This is the work—to feel balanced again, accepting of what you cannot change, and spending your precious energy on what you can change. You can learn perceive and react to the world in a way that fosters a positive, personal growth.

So much of the work I do with a pregnant or new mother is teaching her how to speak to herself
as she would want to talk to her future child. A new mother, like her child, is constantly learning
and will inevitably make mistakes, but she can respond to these challenges with self love and
encouragement in order to strengthen her skills, her identity, and her role within her family. As
the baby learns to walk, he will stumble, fall, hurt. As a woman is learning how to mother this
child (endlessly), she will stumble, fall, and hurt. The baby doesn’t give up. She shouldn’t give
up. You are figuring this out together, and compassion for others begins with compassion for
yourself.

Motherhood will always come with challenges, both expected and unexpected. The reality of
being a mother will always be different than what you imagined. Yes, your old life is gone, but
your new identity can be one that feels even stronger, more confident, and more grounded, not
only as a mother, but as a person.

There is a lot about motherhood you can’t control. We often spend much of our emotional energy wishing for the past to be different, hoping for others to change, or hiding our true selves because we’re ashamed and think we’re the only ones feeling this way. It will serve us better to focus on what we do have control over—our thoughts, the way we speak to ourselves, the boundaries we create to let the positive support in and keep the negative judgment out.

This is what it looks like to thrive in motherhood, not despite the challenges and the stumbles, but because of them. Even when you’re doing everything right, you’ll still have moments of exasperation and frustration, and that’s when you’ll need to lean on your partner, family, and friends who are moms to find the humor, validation, and empathy we all need.

This can be the new normal. Through motherhood you can become a healthier, happier person.
Introduce yourself to that stranger in the mirror, and give her the love, compassion, and respect
she deserves.

How I Do it “All”

Here’s the thing about doing it “all”: I can’t.

I’ve realized it’s impossible. So when you ask me how I do it,  it’s really because I’m getting help behind-the-scenes and my house isn’t the tidiest all the time.

Recently, my older son brought up wanting friends. I also realized I could not devote the time that is needed to teach him. With a younger child, a full-time career, my Moments of Musing business, and house work, I am stretched pretty thin.

 So, today I enrolled my older son in preschool and he begins in a couple days!

It’s hard letting go of my baby and of the idea I had in my head for homeschooling him for pre school. At the same time, he is excited, and I am excited for him, to get 1-on-1 time with my younger son and to maybe have some downtime to get work done.

This has all been a lesson to me that it’s okay to change and realign plans, and that you simply can’t do it “all” … no matter how great of a mom, wife & employee, etc. you are.

A Stressful Season

Lately, things have been stressful at home. My husband and I are both stretched pretty thin. My husband has an exhausting work schedule, is enrolled in an MBA program, injured his back and is working on a project. I have a full-time work-from-home career, my blog business, and also take care of our house and the boys full-time. 

Needless to say, we have been stressed. 

As you can imagine, that has made for a pretty tension-filled marriage these last few weeks. It felt like we were not seeing eye-to-eye, and arguing or working against one another more than working together and being on the same page. Something had to give. I know marriage is not easy, is a lot of work, and that there will be bumps. I knew it would be okay but I really dislike conflict. I also know a hectic lifestyle can affect one’s health, focus and sleep… and it was showing. We were both tired, cranky and could use a vacation. Luckily, we have one coming up!

As relaxing and amazing as vacation will be, it is a temporary fix, though. So, I have also been trying something new in my routine to help alleviate said stress: drinking Bigelow Benefits tea.
