Tidying Up – Our Linen Closet

Filed Under: home decor, tidying up // January 14, 2019

Happy Monday! I am home today feeling under the weather but that’s not surprising to me since both the boys have had colds. I am just ready to get better and to feel 100% again!

Over the weekend, I was feeling a bit anxious on top of feeling sick. Winter is not my favorite season because of the hibernation that goes with it. I’d much rather spend my days outside with the kids than inside day after day. Don’t get me wrong— l love our home but after a couple days I start to get cabin fever.

As I was approaching Day 3 of being home, I started to feel down. I was feeling overwhelmed with motherhood (sleep had been minimal due to teething and fevers) and all the house work that needed to be done. Some days, I feel like our home is so disorganized and I am quite disappointed that we’ve let it get like this. I understand it might seem extreme or out of left field because to others, our home might look put together. However, that’s because it usually does when we have houseguests…unless you look into our closets, which is where we hide our disorganization!

Being a dual working home without a maid, it’s hard to find time to get everything in order. Admittedly, house work usually falls last on our weekend to-do list, which also consists of relaxation, quality time together, and grocery shopping. That’s mainly because it feels like a never-ending daunting task.

So, on Saturday, I decided to start the Marie Kondo Netflix show “Tidying Up.” A few minutes into the very relatable first episode (a family of four), I was hooked. I started planning my tidying projects right then.

*Before I get to my current state of tidying up, I should explain that clutter gives me anxiety. I don’t know when it really began but I remember the first time I realized it.

CLUTTER & THE ANXIETY IT GIVES ME

When Tim and I lived in Chicago—really any time pre-parenthood—we had MUCH less stuff and therefore we were much better organized. It was in Chicago, actually, that I realized disorganization and clutter brought on anxiety for me.  Tim’s belongings from Hawaii arrived while I was at work so surprised was an understatement as to how I felt when I got home that day. I took one look around and went into our kitchen and started internally freaking out. Needless to say, I encouraged him to part ways with much of his things that he would not be using. Looking back, I feel a little bad I did that but we donated the items, which is what I do with 99% of the things we part ways with, so it went to people who would have a purpose for them.

BEING GRATEFUL FOR WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE

I think my favorite part of Marie Kondo’s KonMari method is the newfound appreciation for things we already own. For example, prior to tidying up our linen closet, my first project, I thought we needed more shower curtains. When I reorganized, I realized we have more than enough so I didn’t feel the urge to go out and buy more. I was actually appreciative of the ones we already have. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I also found a Christmas present I’d hidden in the closet but forgot about because it was covered! S was excited when I gifted it to him while cleaning thmy closet out haha (He tidied the living room by moving his toys into the play room while I tidied the closet!)

TIDYING UP OUR LINEN CLOSET

My first area in the house I wanted to tackle was the linen closet. Clothing was a close-second but I figured it’s best to get ALL of our laundry done so we can pile every piece of clothing onto our bed to see what we have. (I already anticipate feeling overwhelmed at that part.) The linen closet is a place I look into daily, so seeing it organized would help me a lot. I did what Marie suggested and took everything out. It all looked like a mess but I felt okay because I knew progress was being made! I then got storage bins from around the house that we weren’t using (I eventually want to change them to wicker baskets). I separated all of the items in the closet — embarrassingly, everything was all over the place as you can see in the “Before” photo. As you can see, I have separated the items, rolled them (instead of folding in a stack) and can now find things with ease. I also brought up two to three bags on unfolded laundry that were household items, which was a relief, and made a pile of things to give away or toss.

This was very therapeutic for me. Just ask my husband–I was raving about the process to him. He’s even watched a bit of the show with me and is on board! It truly feels like a weight has lifted. I feel more in charge of our household items and I am ready to tackle our clothing now!

HoHoHome Sweet Home—Christmas Decor

Filed Under: Christmas decor, home, home decor // December 12, 2018

This post is sponsored by Christmas Tree Shops but all opinions are my own.

I’m starting to think I should begin decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving. It feels like Christmas is so soon and I’ve only just put the final touches on our indoor decor, which I take the reigns on. (I leave most of the outdoor decor for my husband to do.)

This past weekend, we finally decorated our tree and added some festive touches around the house with Christmas Tree Shops decor. It’s a night I look very forward to because our tree decorating night has become a bit of a tradition filled with Christmas music and movies, hot cocoa or coffee and with the kids placing (more like attempting to place)  the star atop the tree.
OH CHRISTMAS TREE

I hadn’t unveiled our real Christmas tree yet because we hadn’t decorated it yet. We picked up poinsettia pins and ornaments at the Christmas Tree Shops. Christmas Tree Shops has so many ornament and tree decor options. We, however, kept it simple this year to keep R from getting hurt when he grabs at the tree.

It might come as a surprise that the poinsettia pins were my husband’s idea! Admittedly, I was hesitant at first but I actually love how they look. I actually think they really dress it up and it’s pretty much my favorite part of the tree decor.

SANTA CLAUS  IS COMING TO TOWN

We believe in Santa in our home! It never really was a discussion between my husband and I because we both figured we’d stick to our childhood traditions of believing. Playing Santa will be fun!

I get giddy setting out Santa’s cookies too because I can’t wait to see S’s face when he sees the cookies we’re eaten! Also… I love cookies so there’s that. We’ve set out this cookies plate from Christmas Tree Shops as decor for now but S knows what it’s for come Christmas!

HOT COCOA WITH MY HUSBAND

When my husband saw a hot cocoa and s’mores set featuring Nutella he brought it to my attention. And I brought it home with us! It’s all yummy. Plus, we love coffee so the mugs will last us way past Christmastime- so it was a win-win. It’s hard to sneak in moments alone so sometimes a quiet morning sipping our coffees will do just fine.

Believe it or not, Christmas Tree Shops don’t only sell Christmas decor and items. They offer an exciting, changing seasonal assortment of affordable and stylish decor year-round. I’m talking furniture, wood signs, items for pets and even a variety of foods! So don’t hesitate stopping in even after Christmas!

2 Easy Steps to Dress Up a “Naked” Wreath

Filed Under: Christmas decor, Christmas wreath, DIY, home decor // December 7, 2018

I was recently shopping for a wreath for one of our bathroom doors. I kept checking the aisle and looking at the different wreaths.  I couldn’t find one I particularly liked, though. At first, I was just going to leave the store empty-handed. Then, I noticed a rather bare wreath and had an idea — I’d design my own! With these two (yes, just two!) easy steps, you can too!

All you’ll need is a “naked” wreath, a bow and simple decor of your choice. If the wreath doesn’t have pine cones (mine did), you might also want to get these to add in.

1. Simply lay your wreath on a flat surface. Add a bow.

2. Add decor. This can be pine cones, mini Christmas trees, mini bows, bells, etc.

Hang it up and there you have it!

5 Baby and Toddler-Friendly Christmas Tree Decor Ideas

Filed Under: christmas with baby, christmas with toddler, home decor // December 3, 2018

Over the weekend, we celebrated one year in our home. We almost didn’t think we’d get into our new home in time for the holidays so a December 1st move-in was amazing. We decorated but it was pretty minimal because of the busyness of moving in and the time crunch we were in to do it all.

This year, I started decorating the day after Thanksgiving and have added many more decorations to the mix. I’ll have a blog up soon regarding decor but in the meantime, I wanted to share ways to decorate your Christmas tree if you’ve got young babies or toddler at home. You don’t have to give up your Christmas just because you have a mobile little one.

Christmas time is my favorite holiday season and I equate a Christmas tree with many traditions: decorating, placing presents, and opening presents. It’s also so pretty and sets a festive mood in our home. It’s no surprise it’s so attractive to the boys.

This year, R is a couple months older and thus more mobile than S was his first Christmas. We are, however, still putting up a tree (two actually!) and simply using shatterproof ornaments. S was pretty good last year and aside from taking ornaments off the tree and putting them around the house, we did not have any issues.

Here are some fun ways you can put up a tree and decorate it without the concern of harm to your little one and/or broken Christmas decor:

Making Our House a Home

Filed Under: home decor, homeowners, New home // May 31, 2018

When we stepped foot inside our home, I knew my husband would fall in love with it. Heck, when I looked at the photos, I was taken aback. I needed a bit of convincing due to its distance from NYC but my husband had me sold shortly after seeing it our first time.
I probably will never do a full home tour for privacy reasons but I thought it’d be fun to show you how we’ve decorated the main spaces and what progress we’ve made in making the house our home sweet home.
