Ways to Help Puerto Rican Americans following Hurricane Maria

Filed Under: Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico // September 25, 2017

Due to the destruction following Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico, fellow Americans are hungry, and without electricity and basic necessities. It can take 6 months to regain electricity, 1 year or more to regrow agriculture, and up to 10 years to rebuild the island’s infrastructure.

The devastation in Puerto Rico has many people wondering how they can help their fellow Americans. I’ve compiled lists* to make it simple for you:

Hurricane Relief Organization Funds

Unidos Por Puerto Rico/ United for Puerto Rico, fund put together by the First Lady of Puerto Rico

Unidos, fund put together by New York City civic leaders

Banco de Alimientos PR/ Feeding America, a Puerto Rico-based nonprofit

Concilio, Philadelphia nonprofit

Save the Children

ConPRmetidos, a Puerto Rico-based nonprofit

National Boricua Human Rights Network, a Chicago-based nonprofit

Global Giving

UNICEF

The Salvation Army

Donating Items in

NYC

New Jersey

Miami

*Contact with family and families I know has been limited or nonexistent. If I find out items they personally need, I will also share that information.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Fred Rogers

Thank you!
